Nabopolassar
Nabopolassar was the first king of Chaldea, and a main player in bringing about the empire by successfully revolting against Assyria around 620 BCE. Soon after taking power, he decided he wanted to expand westward and gain more land in Syria and Phoenicia. After the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BCE, a conflict between Necho of Egypt and Nebuchadnezzar, Nabopolassar’s son who was a military leader, Chaldea ended up victorious and gained control over the people in Syria and Phoenicia. Shortly after this battle, Nabopolassar died in 604 BCE. In the picture to the left is a depiction of the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BCE. The battle was fought by Nebuchadnezzar under Nabopolassar against Egypt.

Nebuchadnezzar
Nebuchadnezzar's reign began in 604 BCE after Nabopolassar’s demise. Immediately, he continued expanded the Chaldean borders by conquering the Cimmerians and Scythians to gain full control in Syria and Phoenicia. He then decided to turn his focus to Judah and the unclaimed areas in Syria. He dealt with two uprisings in Judah and ordered many deportations, finally destroying Jerusalem and deporting most of the Judeans in 596 BCE. Nebuchadnezzar also significantly contributed architecturally to the city of Babylon with the Hanging Gardens, the Great Ziggurat, the Ishtar Gate, the main procession street, his grand palace, and many more cultural and practical projects. Nebuchadnezzar died in 562 BCE.

Nabonidus
Nabonidus began his reign in 555 BCE and his reign ended in 538 BCE. He was the last king of Chaldea. Nabonidus was remembered to have angered the priests of Babylon by trying to change the main deity of the city. The priests went on to help Cyrus the Great of Persia conquer Babylon and absorb it into the Persian empire.
